Εγγραφή Ελλήνων Ομογενών και νομίμως διαμενόντων μεταναστών στους εκλογικούς καταλόγους

Η διαδικασία εγγραφής των Ελλήνων ομογενών και των νομίμως διαμενόντων μεταναστών στους εκλογικούς καταλόγους για τις προσεχείς δημοτικές εκλογές ξεκίνησε σήμερα 1η Ιουνίου και θα διαρκέσει έως τις 31 Αυγούστου. Για την εγγραφή και την κατάρτιση των ειδικών εκλογικών καταλόγων προβλέπεται μια εύκολη και απλή διαδικασία. Κάθε ενδιαφερόμενος μπορεί να μάθει αν και πού ψηφίζει είτε μέσω της ιστοσελίδας του Υπουργείου  (www.ypes.gr)  είτε απευθυνόμενος στο Δήμο της κατοικίας του, όπου και θα υποβάλλει αίτηση εγγραφής.

New York, NY- On April 6, 2010 The Pan-Thracian Union of America “ORPHEUS” in cooperation with the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York remembered the Hellenic Genocide in Thrace and all victims of the Armenian, Assyrian and Hellenic Genocide perpetrated by Turkey. This year’s event marks the second year in a row that community activists and leaders gathered at Ralph J Bunche Park outside the United Nations in New York for the commemoration of Hellenic Genocide in Thrace, Asia Minor and Pontos.

 

Organizers of the event Ioannis Fidanakis, and Nikolaos Taneris were assisted by board members of the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York, Mr. Christos Orfanakos and Mr. Ioannis Goros in setting up placards with reproductions of American newspaper accounts of the Hellenic Genocide, and poster boards of Genocide perpetrators “ENVER” PASHA and Mustafa Kemal. The educational pamphlet “The Genocide of Greeks: A Case Study of the Region of Thrace” by Theofanis Malkidis was distributed to a diverse group of people attending which at one point included scores of local  elementary school students. This year a giant ceremonial funereal wreath of flowers was propped up by the podium, alongside a sign that read “GREEK GENOCIDE PERPETRATED BY TURKEY 1914-1923” (Please view links to articles below for pictures)

 

Master of Ceremonies and current President of the Pan Thracian Union of America “Orpheus” Nikolaos Taneris addressed the crowd and acknowledged the activists in attendance and those honored attendees seated by the speaker’s podium for dedication to Genocide awareness over the years. Mr. Bill Theo was a notable of attendance; Mr. Theo has been organizing a Greek Genocide Memorial in Three Hierarch’s Church in Brooklyn going back to the 1990s and has lectured around the USA about the Genocide in Smyrna that is commemorated on the days of September 9-22 every year.  Taneris encouraged the attendees to speak out and tell their stories to the world, at one point a descendent of Genocide survivors, Mr. Aristides Philip Duval  came to the stage and related the story of how his grandfather was hanged by the Turks in Thrace.  The event commenced with the recital of the ancient Hellenic hymn “THANATOS” in original Hellenic by Hellenic scholar Georgia Nomikos

 

Speakers included Mr. Garo Manjikian , the Executive Director of the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA)-Eastern Region, Mr. Sabri Atman the founder and director of the Assyrian Genocide and Research Center, Mr. Elias Tsekerides a community activist who is currently Deputy President of the International Confederation of Pontian Hellenes and Coordinator of the Greek Independence Day Parade  that will take place on April 18th  on Fifth Avenue in New York City and President of the Parish Council of Prophet Elias Church of Yonkers, N.Y. Mr. Elias Tsekerides is also Past President of the Pan Pontian Federation of U.S.A. and CANADA, past Parade Chairman and Treasurer of the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York and an Active Member of the Order of AHEPA Chapter No. 51, Yonkers, N.Y and very much involved in the Political Arena locally, State wide and Nationally. Mr. Dimitris Molohides the President of the Pan-Pontian Federation USA and CANADA who has lead Pontian Genocide commemorations also spoke and was honored.

 

This year’s event was covered by influential writer Pamela Geller the editor and publisher of the Atlas Shrugs Web site she is also former associate publisher of the New York Observer. Her Op-Eds have appeared in The Washington Times, Newsmax, Human Events, Big Government, WorldNetDaily, the American Thinker, Israel National News, and other publications. She is the author (with Robert Spencer) of the forthcoming book The Post-American Presidency: The Obama Administration’s War on America (Threshold Editions/Simon & Schuster).

UNWANTED FLOWERS:

Following the conclusion of the event Mr. Nikolaos Taneris, President of the Pan Thracian Union of America “Orpheus” and Mr. Ioannis Fidanakis, former President and board member of the Pan Thracian Union of America “Orpheus” took the ceremonial funereal wreath for the inncoent victims of the Greek Genocide to the Greek Consulate in New York on 69 E. 79 Street in Manhattan. To our dismay, when the Greek diplomats saw our wreath and the pamphlet “GREEK GENOCIDE IN THRACE: A CASE STUDY” they quickly bowed their heads and scurried away and hid from sight. Not even a thank you, or an acknowledgement was made for the innocent victims of the Greek Genocide by the diplomats or representatives of Greece in New York. Flowers for the innocent victims of the Greek Genocide of 1914-1923, are for the Greek diplomats of New York, Unwanted Flowers.

April 6th has been designated by The World Thracian Congress as the International Remembrance Day for the Greek Genocide in Eastern Thrace (Anatoliki Thraki) , in recent years,  the International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) recognized this genocide stating:»BE IT RESOLVED that it is the conviction of the International Association of Genocide Scholars that the Ottoman campaign against Christian minorities of the Empire between 1914 and 1923 constituted a genocide against Armenians, Assyrians, and Pontian and Anatolian Greeks. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Association calls upon the government of Turkey to acknowledge the genocides against these populations, to issue a formal apology, and to take prompt and meaningful steps toward restitution.»

Με την παρουσία του Δημάρχου της Καλύμνου, κ.
Γεωργίου Ρούσσου, οι Καλύμνιοι της Νέας Υόρκης
διοργάνωσαν χοροεσπερίδα την οποία αφιέρωσαν στην γιορτή των  75 χρόνων ζωής του συλλόγου τους.
Στον χαιρετισμό που απύθυνε ο κ. Ρούσσος προς τους παρευρισκόμενους αναφέρθηκε στις δραστηριότητες του συλλόγου συγχαίροντας την πρόεδρο κ. Ευδοκία Καμπούρη αλλά παι τον πρόεδρο της Παν-Καλυμνιακής Ομοεπονδίας Αμερικής κ. Εμμανουήλ Φράγκο
Ως γνωστόν οι Καλύμνιοι έχουν τέσσερεις αξιόλογους συλλόγους οι οποίοι απαρτίζουν την Παν-Καλυμνιακή Ομοσπονδία.Οι σύλλογοι αυτοί είναι στην Νέα Υόρκη, στο Οχάϊο, στην Ινδιάνα και στο Τάρπον Σπρινγκ της Φλώριδας.
 
Ένα πολύ επιτυχημένο αποκρηάτικο γλέντι διοργάνωσε ο κεφαλονίτικος σύλλογος ΚΕΦΑΛΟΣ το απόγευμα της κυριακής 7 Φεβρουρίου γιά μικρούς και μεγάλους. Το κομφετί και ο χαρτοπόλεμος είχαν την πρώτη θέση στην όμορφη αυτή διασκέδαση που συπλήρωνε η ορχήστρα του Νίκου Σοφού με τα αλήσμόνητα κεφαλονίτικα τραγούδια.
Το Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο του συλλόγου ευχαρίστησε όλους τους καλεσμένους και τους ευχήθηκε χρόνια πολλά
Επίσης ωραιότατο γλέντι και γιά την καθαρή Δευτέρα είχε ο ΚΕΦΑΛΟΣ όπου προσφέρθηκαν σαρακοστιανοί μεζέδες αλλά και άφθονη ρομπόλα.
 
Στο Χιώτικο σπίτι είχα τον ετήσιο χορό τους οι Μαθρακιώτες, ενός από τα Διαπόντεια νησιά στα βόρεια της Κέρκυρας.Τιμώμενα πρόσωπα της βραδυάς οι Κωνσταντίνος Κατέχης, Νικόλαος Μάνεσης και Κωνσταντίνος Αργυρός στους οποίους απενεμείθει διάκριση γιά τις υπηρεσίες τους προς τον σύλλογο
Η διασκέδαση κράτησε μέχρι τις πρωινές ώρες.

A response to Andrew Apostolou’s abomination, sent on January 22 but not published by the Wall Street Journal

Dear friends,

On January 20, 2010 Andrew Apostolou published an op ed piece in the Wall Street Journal titled «The Shame of Modern Greece;» the points so obliviously forced or ignored the facts (both as to the burning of the synagogue and the historical context) and maliciously facile that I felt compelled to respond. My letter to the editor was sent on January 22 but it has so far not been published, probably because it exceeds the ten-second soundbite. I reproduce it below for those who may be interested and for the record (scripta manent, if only on the internet).

To the Editor [of the Wall Street Journal]:

Andrew Apostolou’s «The Shame of Modern Greece» (Opinion Europe, January 20, 2010), about the arson attacks on a historic synagogue in Chania on the island of Crete,  represents a case of a premature judgment used to support a simple-minded sermon without respect for the complexity of the historic relationship between the Greeks and the Jews, which stretches back about 2,500 years.

Contrary to Mr. Apostolou, who did not have all the facts, of the five people accused of arson four are foreign, i.e. non-Greek nationals (two are British and two Americans), and one a Greek national; the two British and the Greek individuals have been arrested by the Greek police and will be charged based on video taped evidence of their actions and the confession of at least one of them. The US nationals are fugitives.

As for the larger issue of anti-Semitism in Greece, there are indeed bigots of all stripes in the country, though these are few and tend to be marginalized; Greece does not have an extreme rightist fascist or racist party that espouses anti-Semitism. Some on the left (including a major left-wing daily) promote «the now banal comparison of Israel with the Nazis,» a view that may be obnoxious but hardly racist. The comparison to anti-Semitism in Turkey falls flat, given that Hitler’s Mein Kampf has sold hundreds of thousands of copies over the last few years in that country, not to mention the fact that its political leadership is not particularly warm towards the state of Israel, 

The relationship between the Greeks and the Jews  is too complex to be reduced to slogans such as «[m]any Greeks do not know that their second largest city, Salonika, had a Jewish majority for most of its modern history.» The reality is that the many Greeks know this fact, as they also know that in 1492 the Jews were settled in Thessalonica by the Ottoman Turks after the latter had massacred and enslaved the Christian population of the city and seized its properties. The Jews replaced the tax base of which the Ottomans deprived themselves as a result of their massacres.

In the more recent past while during World War II over eighty percent of the Jews of Greece were exterminated by the National Socialist occupation forces, assisted by local collaborators (as in all of Europe), a significant number of Christian Greeks (including the family of the undersigned) simply assumed it their duty to protect and to hide their Jewish friends and neighbors. Mr. Apostolou’s accusatory tone about «the often shameful and ambiguous stance that too many (sic) Greeks took during the Second World War» reflects a studied ignorance of human nature universally and serves an anti-Greek political agenda. How many Europeans or Americans really intervened to stop the genocide of the Armenians, the Greeks and other Christians is Asia Minor by the Turks? Indeed many western countries still refuse to recognize that event, which prompted Raphael Lemkin to coin the very term genocide.

Εκδήλωση της Ένωσης Ελληνοαμερικανών Λογοτεχνών

 (από τον κ. Διονύση Κονταρίνη – Νέα Υόρκη)

Μια ενδιαφέρουσα εκδήλωση για την γιορτή των Ελληνικών Γραμμάτων πραγματοποίησε την 25η Ιανουαρίου η Ένωση Ελληνοαμερικανών Λογοτεχνών σε συνεργασία με την Ιόνιο Πολιτιστική Ομοσπονδία και τους Εφτανησιώτικους Συλλόγους.

Θέμα της εκδήλωσης ήταν η αναφορά στο ιστορικό μυθιστόρημα με ομιλήτρια την γνωστή λογοτέχνιδα κ. Βάνα Κοντομέρκου, η οποία με μια ενδιαφέρουσα ομιλία της ανέλυσε την αξιόλογη παρουσία του ιστορικού μυθιστορήματος στην ελληνική λογοτεχνία αλλά και στην παγκόσμια.

Ο δημοσιογράφος και λογοτέχνης Διονύσης Κονταρίνης  
παρουσίασε το πρόσφατα εκδοθέν ιστορικό μυθιστόρημα της Κεφαλονίτισσας Αικατερίνης Γεωργακάτου με τίτλο
«Ο κουρσαροφάγος» κάνοντας σχετική κριτική. Πρόκειται για την ιστορία του Ανδρέα Τρωϊάνου ο οποίος τον 12ο αιώνα με ιδιόκτητο στόλο κατάφερε να απαλλάξει το Ιόνιο από την παρουσία των Αγαρηνών πειρατών.

Γυναικοκρατία: Από την αρχαία Ελλάδα στη Νέα Υόρκη

 

Οι Έλληνες της Θράκης αποτελούν, όπου και εάν βρίσκονται ένα σημαντικό φορέα διάσωσης και μετάδοσης της αρχαίας ελληνικής παράδοσης. Οι πρόσφυγες της βόρειας και της ανατολικής Θράκης που ζουν μετά το 1922 σε όλο τον κόσμο, παρά τις δυσκολίες κατόρθωσαν να διαφυλάξουν ένα μεγάλο μέρος από τις φορεσιές, τα τραγούδια και τις συνήθειές τους, πολλές αυτές πανάρχαιες.

 

Ανάμεσα στις άλλα έθιμα που διασώζονται, Αναστενάρια, οι Καλόγεροι και ο Μπέης, είναι η «Μέρα της Μπάμπως» ή «Μπαμπώμερα», της μάμμης όπως την έλεγαν οι αρχαίοι, η οποία με τις γνώσεις και την πείρα της βοηθούσε τις έγκυες γυναίκες στον τοκετό. Έτσι η γιαγιά από μάμμη έγινε μαμή και μια φορά το χρόνο, τον Ιανουάριο, οι γυναίκες της αποδίδουν τις τιμές που τις αρμόζουν.

 

Έθιμο Θρακικό, Ελληνικό, πανάρχαιο, το οποίο που συνεχίζεται και σήμερα από τους κατοίκους που ήρθαν από την Ανατολική Ρωμυλία και την Ανατολική Θράκη, και εγκαταστάθηκαν στις Σέρρες, στη Ροδόπη, στη Ξάνθη, στον Έβρο, στη Νέα Υόρκη.

 

Ο Θρακιώτης καθηγητής από τη Μεσημβρία Γεώργιος Μέγας, γράφει ότι το έθιμο αυτό έχει τις ρίζες του στην αρχαιότητα, στα «Θεσμοφόρια», που ήταν γυναικεία και συγχρόνως αγροτική εορτή, κατά την οποία οι γυναίκες «επεκαλούντο γονιμότητα και δι’ εαυτάς», και στα «Αλώα» τα οποία γιορτάζονταν στην Ελευσίνα, την 26η Ποσειδαιώνος, δηλαδή στις αρχές του Ιανουαρίου, όπου και μετείχαν μόνον γυναίκες, οι οποίες «πορεύονται τα αίσχιστα λέγουσαι βαστάζουσιν είδη σωμάτων απρεπή, ανδρεία τε και γυναικεία, οίνος τε πολύς πρόκειται και τράπεζας και εκ πλακούντας κατεσκευασμένα αμφοτέρων γενών αιδεία».

 

Απεικονίσεις των γενετησίων μορίων είναι χαρακτηριστικά για όλες τις γιορτές οι οποίες αποσκοπούσαν στην «Γένεσιν των ανθρώπων και των καρπών».

 

Την 8η Ιανουαρίου, γιορτή της Αγίας Δομνίκης ή Δομνής- η μαία της Παναγίας κατά τη Γέννηση του Χριστού- η κάθε γυναίκα του χωριού η οποία έχει αποκτήσει παιδιά έπρεπε να επισκεφτεί την οικία της μαμής, να της προσφέρει δώρα τα οποία ήταν χρήσιμα στο έργο της, όπως σαπούνι και πετσέτα, νερό, καθώς και δώρα για τη μαμή όπως κάλτσες, μαντίλα, ποδιά, ενώ ετοίμαζε διάφορα φαγητά και ποτά. Από νωρίς το πρωί, οι γυναίκες αφού τελείωναν τις δουλειές του σπιτιού άρχιζαν την ετοιμασία των φαγητών, τα οποία θα προσφέρανε στη μαμή, αλλά θα τα έπαιρναν και μαζί τους στο βραδινό γλέντι.

 

Όταν έφτανε στο σπίτι της μαμής, η «μπάμπω» έβγαινε έξω της έριχνε νερό, της έδινε το σαπούνι για να πλένει τα χέρια της, γιατί αλλιώς, όπως λένε, στον άλλο κόσμο η μαμή θα της προτείνει τα χέρια της άπλυτα, και στη συνέχεια την πετσέτα για να σκουπιστεί. Το δοχείο με το νερό το κλωτσούσε κι αν έπεφτε μπρούμυτα θα γεννούσε αγόρι ενώ αν έπεφτε ανάσκελα θα γεννούσε κορίτσι. Στη συνέχεια έμπαιναν μέσα στο σπίτι της μαμής, και η γυναίκα που επιθυμούσε να τεκνοποιήσει έκανε μετάνοια και φιλούσε το χέρι της λέγοντας:

– Να με φέρεις ένα ( αγόρι ή κορίτσι ) γερό.

– Να’ σαι γερή κορίτσι μ’, να’ σαι καλά, απαντούσε η μπάμπω.

 

Αν μάλιστα η γυναίκα ήταν έγκυος τότε η μαμή της καρφίτσωνε στο πέτο της κι ένα λουλούδι, λέγοντάς της να της φέρει ένα παιδί όμορφο όπως και το λουλούδι.

Η μαμή με τη σειρά της κερνούσε κι εκείνη τις γυναίκες που την επισκέπτονταν και στη συνέχεια έστρωνε το τραπέζι, κι έτσι ξεκινούσε το γλέντι το οποίο θα συνεχιζόταν το βράδυ. Τις συζητήσεις τους, δεν επιτρεπόταν να τα ακούσει αυτί άντρα.

 

Το απόγευμα, οι γυναίκες στολισμένες με φλουριά έκαναν πομπή η οποία περιδιαβαίνοντας τους δρόμους του χωριού κατέληγε στο καφενείο από το οποίο έδιωχναν όλους τους άνδρες, οι οποίοι αναλάμβαναν τις διάφορες δουλειές. Οι μόνοι οι οποίοι είχαν «άσυλo» και παρουσία στο γλέντι, ήταν ο καφετζής και ο γκαϊντατζής ο οποίος συνόδευε το γλέντι.

 

Τιμητική θέση στο γλέντι είχε η «μπάμπω», η οποία πρώτη έσερνε το χορό έχοντας κρεμασμένη στη ποδιά της μια πετσέτα και κρατώντας ένα μαντήλι. Της φορούσαν φλουριά, αρμαθιές από καλαμπόκια, της έβαζαν καρφίτσες, μπουρλιές και λουλούδια για να φέρει στις γυναίκες όμορφα παιδιά.

 

Όλες χόρευαν με τη σειρά, έλεγαν ιστορίες και ανέκδοτα και το γλέντι κρατούσε μέχρι να βγει ο ήλιος. Ήταν ένα γλέντι για να χαρεί η «μπάμπω» αλλά μαζί της και όλες οι παντρεμένες γυναίκες και κυρίως οι χήρες, η οποίες δεν είχαν τη δυνατότητα να γλεντήσουν άλλες μέρες αφού ήταν ασυνόδευτες.

 

Το πανάρχαιο έθιμο της «Μπάμπως» αναβιώνουν εδώ και χρόνια, και συνέχισαν και φέτος τα μέλη της Πανθρακικής Ένωσης Αμερικής «Ορφέας» στο Σταθάκειο Πολιτιστικό Κέντρο στην Αστόρια της Νέας Υόρκης. Ο «Ορφέας» σχεδόν από την αρχή της ύπαρξης της, το 1983, κρατά ζωντανό κάθε χρόνο το έθιμο αυτό.

 

Ο «Ορφέας» με πρωτεργάτες νέους, τον νυν πρόεδρο Ν. Τανέρι και τον πρώην Ι. Φυδανάκη, τα παιδιά που λίγους μήνες πριν διοργάνωσαν την πρώτη εκδήλωση στον ΟΗΕ για τη γενοκτονία, αναβιώνουν το έθιμο και συνεχίζουν την πλούσια Θρακική παράδοση, στη αμερικανική μεγαλούπολη. Οι Θρακιώτες ηλικίας 20 – 30 ετών, παιδιά όλα γεννημένα στις ΗΠΑ συνεχίζουν τα Θρακικά έθιμα, με βασικό στόχο, να έλθει η νέα γενιά πιο κοντά στην Ένωση. Η Ένωση αποτελεί το σημαντικότερο και μοναδικό φορέα εκπροσώπησης για τους συμπατριώτες μας στις ΗΠΑ, οι οποίοι κατάγονται από την Θράκη. Μάλιστα, έχοντας αναπτύξει έντονη εθνική και φιλανθρωπική δράση η Ένωση προσφέρει όχι μόνο στην ελληνοαμερικανική Κοινότητα, αλλά και στη γενέτειρα, με δωρεές ιατρικών οργάνων και κινήσεις για τα εθνικά θέματα. Η εκδήλωση στον ΟΗΕ για τη Γενοκτονία, η οποία υλοποιήθηκε από την «Ένωση» και άλλους φορείς που συμμετέχουν νέοι συμπατριώτες μας, αποτελεί σημαντικότατη παρέμβαση, η οποία αποτελεί σταθμό στη διεκδίκηση αναγνώρισης στις ΗΠΑ και στους διεθνείς οργανισμούς.
